Cortez Masto, Colleagues Introduce Bill To Keep Immigrant Families Together
U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined Senators Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) and Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) in introducing the Keep Families Together Act, legislation that would prioritize family unity in immigration enforcement and provide guidelines to ensure that families are kept together throughout the legal process. To this day, 2,000 migrant children remain separated from their parents as a result of the Trump administration’s 2018 family separation policy. “Separating children from their parents is inhumane and goes against everything we stand for as a country,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “The Trump administration’s family separation policy is a moral stain in our nation’s history that can never happen again.” The Keep Families Together Act also explicitly prohibits the separation of children from their parents at the U.S. border, except in extraordinary circumstances. Specifically, the legislation would: Full text of the bill is available HERE. The first and only Latina Senator, Senator Cortez Masto has consistently pushed to fix our broken immigration system by balancing critical border security measures with a path to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS holders, and essential workers. She’s introduced legislation to fix our outdated immigration laws. She’s led calls to address delays in DACA renewal applications and make it easier for mixed status families to stay together.
Rosen Votes for Bill Supporting Reproductive Freedom, Anti-Choice Republicans Block Passage
U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement after anti-choice Republicans in the Senate blocked the passage of the Reproductive Freedom for Women Act. The legislation, which she voted for and helped introduce, would have reaffirmed support for restoring Roe v. Wade’s reproductive rights and protections. “The Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade opened the door to countless extreme anti-choice attacks on women’s reproductive freedoms – putting at risk women’s health and ability to make their own family planning decisions,” said Senator Rosen. “I helped introduce this legislation to reaffirm our support for restoring Roe in federal law. I’m deeply disappointed that anti-choice Senate Republicans blocked it, but I won’t give up fighting to protect women’s freedoms to make their own reproductive and health care decisions. ” Senator Rosen has been working to restore reproductive freedoms and oppose anti-choice efforts to restrict access to reproductive rights. Earlier this year, she joined legislation to protect IVF treatments in federal law. Senator Rosen also helped introduce the Let Doctors Provide Reproductive Health Care Act to protect health care professionals from being prosecuted for providing reproductive care to their patients, which Senate Republicans recently blocked from passing earlier this week. She also recently voted to protect women’s constitutional right to access birth control.
Congresswoman Lee Statement Against Legislation to Make it More Difficult for Millions of U.S. Citizens to Vote
Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement after voting against extreme legislation that would make it more difficult for millions of U.S. citizens to register to vote: “It is already illegal for noncitizens to register or vote in federal elections and I’ve repeatedly supported legislation to prevent noncitizens from voting. I believe it’s important that we find a common sense, bipartisan solution to verify citizenship when registering and ensure only eligible U.S. citizens are able to vote. “Today’s extreme legislation did not do that — it would gut mail and online voter registration in states like Nevada and make it nearly impossible for millions of citizens to register to vote. “Under this dangerous legislation, birth certificates for individuals who have changed their names, like married women, would not be considered proof of citizenship, and Americans would be prohibited from using military IDs or tribal IDs when registering to vote. This would put millions of U.S. citizens at risk of having their names removed from state voter rolls. “I voted against this legislation because it would threaten Americans’ constitutional right to vote.”

Steven HorsfordMember of Congress Taking Action to Combat Gun Violence In recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Month, I’m reaffirming my commitment to end the cycle of violence that affects too many across our country. This is underscored by a personal tragedy of mine: 32 years ago today, my father was killed due to senseless gun violence. In his honor, I introduced the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, parts of which were passed two years ago in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. My legislation seeks to invest $5 billion over eight years in proven community-based violence intervention programs. These programs are designed to drastically reduce community violence, including gun violence. Evidence shows them cutting rates in half within two years. It also prevents crime before it occurs, saves lives and breaks the cycle of violence. Improving Our Infrastructure and Safety This year, I’ve submitted requests through the Community Project Funding process to significantly improve infrastructure and services through Nevada’s Fourth District. These projects range from the construction of the Historic Westside Library to the implementation of Vision Zero road safety programs. Each project was selected for its potential to substantially elevate public safety, educational opportunities, and sustainable development across our communities. More information on these proejcts can be found on my website. Engaging with the Community I’ve been grateful for the chance to have valuable interactions across our district over the last several weeks. I’ve participated in various activities, including atelevised discussion on gun violence preventionand its broader implications following recent Supreme Court decisions. Additionally, I hosted a roundtable with foster youth at UNLV to address their unique challenges and successes, and I joined Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm for a tour of a local home undergoing an energy audit, highlighting the cost-saving benefits of clean energy initiatives. I also joined the Latin Chamber of Commerce for a roundtable discussing the importance of expanding work authorization access for undocumented individuals married to U.S. citizens.
LULAC STATEMENT ON EXECUTIVE ORDERS PROTECTING DREAMERS AND SPOUSES OF U.S. CITIZENS FROM DEPORTATION
Washington, DC – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization, applauds President Joe Biden and his Administration for the executive actions protecting Dreamers, and the spouses and stepchildren of U.S. citizens without legal status from deportation. LULAC National President Domingo Garcia stated the following: “Today LULAC is proud to stand with 528,000 Dreamers and close to 500,000 spouses of U.S. Citizens who will have access to updates and adjustments to their legal statuses. We applaud the Biden Administration for offering a pathway to legality for many families that have been separated and torn due to the lack of immigration reform. Today marks the 12th anniversary of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). These two executive orders are the largest immigration reform policies that we have had since DACA. Throughout my leadership at LULAC, I have spoken to, advocated for, and stood beside many Dreamers that came with their families to the U.S. as children. Many of these Dreamers are now adults that have been educated in our universities, formed families, and live in America. They are American. I am hopeful today because they will be able to continue to attain the American dream by having working visas that allow them to continue their contributions to our country. Americans have always taken pride in our history as a Nation of immigrants. If you came to our shores three generations ago, or yesterday, America has always been a nation that welcomes those seeking protection. We are all connected to immigrants, whether they clean our homes, stock our groceries, take care of our children, or have become educated and are now lawyers, doctors, teachers, nurses, elected officials—whatever the role—immigrants are the backbone of America. LULAC continues to our steadfast commitment of advocating for even larger reforms and updates to the U.S.’s immigration system. We believe in a humane and orderly processes that connect immigrants to opportunities for safety and freedom on our shores. Our Latino immigrant workforce is indispensable, contributing not only to the physical infrastructure of our Nation but also to its social, economic, and cultural richness. LULAC will always be a beacon of hope and advocacy for the marginalized. We stand with President Biden on this decision and applaud the efforts taken today.”
