Taking Action to Combat Gun Violence

In recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Month, I’m reaffirming my commitment to end the cycle of violence that affects too many across our country. This is underscored by a personal tragedy of mine: 32 years ago today, my father was killed due to senseless gun violence. In his honor, I introduced the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, parts of which were passed two years ago in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

My legislation seeks to invest $5 billion over eight years in proven community-based violence intervention programs. These programs are designed to drastically reduce community violence, including gun violence. Evidence shows them cutting rates in half within two years. It also prevents crime before it occurs, saves lives and breaks the cycle of violence.

Improving Our Infrastructure and Safety

This year, I’ve submitted requests through the Community Project Funding process to significantly improve infrastructure and services through Nevada’s Fourth District. These projects range from the construction of the Historic Westside Library to the implementation of Vision Zero road safety programs.

Each project was selected for its potential to substantially elevate public safety, educational opportunities, and sustainable development across our communities. More information on these proejcts can be found on my website.

Engaging with the Community

I’ve been grateful for the chance to have valuable interactions across our district over the last several weeks. I’ve participated in various activities, including a
televised discussion on gun violence prevention
and its broader implications following recent Supreme Court decisions. Additionally, I hosted a roundtable with foster youth at UNLV to address their unique challenges and successes, and I joined Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm for a tour of a local home undergoing an energy audit, highlighting the cost-saving benefits of clean energy initiatives. I also joined the Latin Chamber of Commerce for a roundtable discussing the importance of expanding work authorization access for undocumented individuals married to U.S. citizens.

Highlighting Foster Youth Voices on Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day

On Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day, I was honored to host Arria, a former foster youth from Las Vegas. Arria’s time with me and my team included attending
a financial services hearing
, participating in stakeholder meetings, and touring the Capitol. She also
interviewed me about foster and child welfare in Nevada
.

I’m proud of the work Arria is doing to empower foster youth, and I took forward to hearing about her bright future.

Coming in September 16th
