Latina Dr. Antonia Novella was appointed Surgeon General of the United States in 1990, she was the first woman – and first Hispanic – to hold that office. She studied at the University of Puerto Rico, then later moved to the United States to further her career, focusing on both children and underserved communities. She also became deputy director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, where she concentrated on pediatric AIDS. Her role in public health has made an impact in more ways than one.
